Academy Match Summaries for Saturday 24th January 2015

At least all teams managed to get a game (where scheduled) this weekend. A roundup of results…

Birmingham City FC Whites   2 v 0   AFC Rushden & Diamonds U13s
Played at Studley FC

We made the trip to Studley FC to play Birmingham City on the 3G. Good weather and a nice facility and excellent hosts.

We decided and have been working on pressing higher and for the first time looked at playing a 3-1-4-1-1 formation against BCFC and wanted to get off on the front foot. BCFC had other ideas and literally from the kick off they worked the ball down our left and delivered a ball which Morgan Greenhill dispatched to make it 1-0 within the first minute.

The lads regrouped, steadied themselves and got into the roles and got back in to the game working hard and trying to play quickly through the middle. End of period one 1-0.

During the second period Diamonds introduced Dan Lyons who got on the ball and started to impact the game and it looked as though Diamonds could get back in but good defending and counter pressing from BCFC prevented us from breaking through. Both Carter Brophy and Alex Rust worked tirelessly throughout on the wings tracking and then getting wide in transition as BCFC looked to exploit in wide areas. Diamonds created some chances and some great work by Dan Lyons and Alex Rust created an opportunity for Taran Dhawali which was cleared off the line. BCFC started to push their fullbacks on and dominated the Diamonds midfield and the pressure ended when Samuel Collins found the back of the net making it 2-0. The fourth period BCFC really had their tails up and showed great fitness levels. Diamonds centre back Josh Greenham marshalled the troops at the back and kept the score at 2-0. He made a number of vital interceptions and blocks. BCFC used the ball well throughout and deserved the 3 points. We look forward to playing them again and wish them well for the rest of the season.

Tipton Town FC   4 v 1   AFC Rushden & Diamonds U14s
Played at the Shenstone Lodge School, Oldbury

Diamonds started brightly, passing the ball around well and they were rewarded with a goal after 8 minutes from Ben Levy. Tipton leveled things up with some great passing of their own to open up the defense for a well taken goal. Good chances continued for both sides in the second period from end-to-end football. Matt Thomas made some crucial tackles throughout the match, but early in the third period the ball was played through by Tipton to split the Diamonds defense and slotted away for the lead. This started 7 minutes of madness from Diamonds and they conceded 2 further goals with Tipton dominating play at the start of the second half. Three changes were made by Nick Cook and Diamonds got back on an even keel, if not made the most of the remainder of the match but just could find a way through. Some good football played, big challenges and several chances for both sides and an enjoyable game to watch.

AFC Rushden & Diamonds U16s   1 v 3   Sol Moors F.C. U16s
Played at the Malcolm Arnold Academy, Northampton

A game of mistakes is how to sum up all goals in this match. A deserved win for Solihull and back to the drawing board for AFC! Solihull were very bright in the attacking third but Diamonds didn’t work hard enough to prevent the visitors dominating.
