Academy Match Summaries for Saturday 25th October

Back to league action and sandwiched between two JPL indoor Futsal tournament weekends, all but the U15s played…

AFC Rushden & Diamonds U12s   1 v 3   Burton Albion Sils U12s
Played at The Malcolm Arnold Academy.

Excellent goalkeeping from the Burton keeper throughout kept them in this match. In fact he was certainly their star, with numerous key saves and a penalty save that looked a certain goal.

There was some good football from both teams using the whole pitch, especially after an edgy start.

Diamonds really took the game to Burton in the second half, passing the ball around well, creating many chances. William Jones scored Diamonds only goal, but there could have been several more.

A good performance, but just on the wrong side of the scoreline.

Arsenal SS (Cambs) U13s   2 v 1   AFC Rushden & Diamonds U13s
Played at Hampton, Peterborough.

What a great advert for the JPL this game was. Both sides played really good football throughout with Diamonds edging it slightly apart from the score line.

Arsenal started strongly in the first period and had a full squad available. With two injuries before the game Diamonds had no outfield substitutes. It took 15 minutes to get going as Arsenal looked to take advantage and played some nice football towards the end of the first period we put some moves together with Dan Lyons and Oli Hamilton pulling the strings in midfield.

Second period Arsenal again began strongly and took the lead through Zach Findley. Diamonds reacted and started to win the battles in midfield areas and look to exploit the Arsenal defence. We won a free kick just outside the edge of the 18 yard box and Dan Lyons hit a superb strike which we all expected to end in the top corner. The Arsenal keeper made his first of three exceptional saves which kept the score 1-0.

Into the third period Diamonds took the game to Arsenal with midfield taking a real foothold. After some great play Ed Farrell had half a chance which he took brilliantly. Good chances also fell to Callum Newton and Dan Lyons but the Arsenal keeper made two first class saves to keep it 1-1.

AFCR&D defence worked tirelessly throughout and a great save by Ben Bowyer kept it 1-1. Arsenal did break through and a ricochet of an Diamonds defender looped the ball over our keeper to make it 2-1. During the final period Diamonds continued to push and keep the ball well and created chances but we could not get the equaliser.

This was the second meeting in a week between these sides. Closely fought match with a draw a fair result. The visitors took the lead in the 1st period and remained ahead with very even play until the final quarter. Two quick goals for Diamonds gave them the lead with only minutes to go, but Aylestone Park snatched an equaliser.
