AFC Rushden & Diamonds 1 Wellingborough Town 2

AFC Rushden & Diamonds interest in the NFA Hillier Senior Cup ended at the Dog & Duck on Tuesday evening when they suffered a 2-1 defeat by Wellingborough Town. With only three of the players who had started on Saturday, and giving a first team debut to Kyle Davison-Gordon, the Diamonds went behind after 20 minutes when a well-struck free-kick from Jamie Wright found the back of the net.

After a lacklustre first half, there were promising signs at the start of the second period, with the Doughboys keeper finally seeing some action, but Davison-Gordon conceded a penalty with an errant tackle on Jason Turner, who stepped up to score the spot-kick after 51 minutes.

After another fairly turgid period the Diamonds made a number of changes and started to win the midfield battle, but took until the 88th minute to get a goal back through a well-hit shot from Lance Allen, by which time it was too late to force extra-time.

The Diamonds can now fully focus on their league campaign when Harborough Town visit the Dog & Duck on Saturday 5th October KO 3pm.
