AFC Rushden & Diamonds Ladies – NWFL2 Champions

AFC Rushden & Diamonds Ladies were crowned Champions of the Northants Womens Football League Division 2 after a 4-1 victory over Corby Ladies & Girls at the Dog & Duck on Sunday afternoon. This title means the Ladies have completed the double of a League Title and the NWFL Plate in consecutive weekends.

The Ladies had an early scare when Corby Ladies scored the opening goal from the penalty spot with less than five minutes on the clock. After battling hard for the next 20 minutes parity was restored by a long range effort from team captain Fiona Strathern. The Diamonds then went into the break in the lead after a solo goal from Megan Watkins.

In the second half the Diamonds Ladies scored two further goals, both from April Malin, with her second goal, scored in added time, worthy of wrapping up any title as it flew into the goal in front of the Peter De Banke terrace.

The Ladies left the pitch to the strains of “We Are The Champions”, and they will collect their trophy at the forthcoming NWFL Presentation evening.
