AFC Rushden & Diamonds v Desborough Town

AFC Rushden & Diamonds will host Desborough Town on Tuesday evening at the Dog & Duck in the ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League Premier Division. The two sides met at Waterworks Field in a Tuesday evening game in October, with the Diamonds recording a 2-0 win in the rain – report here.

Our Opponents

Desborough Town have the rather unusual nickname of “Ar Tarn”, which is believed to have been adopted from the local pronunciation of “Our Town”. The club was founded in 1896 and joined the Northants League, which was later to be renamed as the United Counties League – and they have remained in the same competition for over a century. They have won the league title nine times, a record beaten only by Rushden Town.

A fire at Braybrooke Rd in December 2008 destroyed their clubhouse, with a replacement opening in February 2011.

When the two teams met in October they were managed by Steve Walker, but he was replaced by ex-Thrapston supremo Ian Walker in November. Walker has since brought in a number of new players, including several from Thrapston. They play in all blue and their website is here, but their twitter feed appears to no longer work. After a promising start to the season they have had a mixed period since, and are now in lower mid-table.

Ex Diamond Daniel Grainger joined Ar Tarn in September, and they also have a number of players from Sileby Rangers title-winning side of last season, including Michael Byrne and David Glass. Diamonds player Brad Harris joined the club after a spell at Braybrooke Road.
