Dog and Duck Stadium, London Road, Wellingborough NN8 2DP
Kick-Off 3pm
ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League Premier Division
Saturday 21st March 2015
AFC Rushden & Diamonds v Wisbech Town
AFC Rushden & Diamonds will play one of the biggest games in their history on Saturday afternoon when fellow UCL title-contenders Wisbech Town visit the Dog & Duck in the ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League Premier Division.
The game is made even more interesting by the fact that the two teams had such a dramatic meeting at the Fenland Stadium earlier in the season, when the Diamonds were 3-1 victors despite ending the game with only 8 men.
After being “under the radar” for many UCL observers in terms of their title challenge for the first part of the season, the Fenmen have put together a magnificent run of results that put them in contention as the Diamonds slipped up either side of Christmas. Prior to their midweek game they had won all 13 league games that they had played in 2015 – their last points dropped being in a defeat by Holbeach United on Boxing Day – but their 2-1 defeat at Peterborough Northern Star on Tuesday will give them added desire for a win at the weekend.
Wisbech are the best-supported team in the UCL after the Diamonds, and are running supporters’ coaches to the game, so it should be a magnificent atmosphere at the Dog and Duck on Saturday.
The Diamonds six goals last weekend took them to 98 league goals for the season (although Thurnby Nirvana scored a late goal last Saturday to make them the first UCL Premier team to hit the century mark) – and Wisbech are not far behind that tally either.
Admission prices are detailed here. See here for some key dates and data relating to the remainder of the season.
Please monitor AFC Rushden & Diamonds Twitter feed (@AFCRD) if the weather conditions suggests the fixture may be in any doubt. Those travelling to the game via the A509 through Little Irchester may have experienced the long delays last weekend due to the roadworks there, and these roadworks are still ongoing.
Our Opponents
Wisbech Town are known as the Fenmen, and were formed in 1920, joining the UCL in 1935. They have then moved to the Eastern Counties League, the Midland League, the Southern League and then were relegated back to the Eastern Counties League in 2002 They moved to the Fenland Stadium in 2010, and the ground has covered terracing behind each goal as well as a stand with over 100 seats. At the end of the 2012-13 season they transferred from the Eastern Counties League to the United Counties League rather than taking promotion to Step 4 they had earned by finishing in runners-up spot in that competition.
They are led by Dick Creasey, and they play in all red. Their revised website is here, and the twitter feed is here.
