Ask The Player – Jack Ashton

The Social Media Team at the club have introduced a new feature for the Club Twitter Account, with a regular “Ask The Player” Q&A session with one of the Diamonds First Team.

On 17th May 2020, Jack Ashton agreed to be the fifth player to take part.

If you don’t have access to social media, or missed the session, here are the Questions and responses in full.

Question – Hayden Pott : Have you ever considered playing left wing, what with your mazy runs up the piitch?

Answer – I actually started when I was young as a left winger, then up front and then left back. But I feel at home at centre back and can’t play anywhere else now.

Question – Matt Hawkins : If you had to choose your best goal in a Diamonds shirt, what game would it be? Concord away in the FA Cup or that last minute header at Sixfields?

Answer –  In terms of goals and finishes. I’d say Concord Rangers away. Still had a lot to do to stick that in the top corner. But if I could score one of them again it would 100% be the one against Kettering in front of all the fans.

Question – Scott Carlin : Why do you support Newcastle?

Answer – My dad got me into Newcastle from early, the good old days of Alan Shearer, Albert, Asprila & Ginola etc. It’s been a tough ride since then but I’ve got my cans ready for when the takeover happens.

Question – Stewart Greenway : During your time at the club, which player have you though should be or has the potential to play at a higher level?

Answer – Liam Dolman could and obviously has played higher! Then the obvious ones that have gone on to play higher like Luke Fairlamb, Claudio Hoban was unreal in his first season with no injuries.

Question – Joseph McCormack : What’s your favourite moment or match at Hayden Road?

Answer – Stourbridge is up there, obviously gaining promotion into the Southern League was a huge moment too. But as from a personal point of view, would be the Stourbridge game as I got the winner and I love a celebration.

Question – Jeremy Keay : What was your favourite moment from this season? Your winner against Stourbridge? And Adam asks how are you coping with no hairdressers?

Answer – It would have to be that yes, it’s always nice to get a last minute winner in front of the fans. Up against a very good side. Luckily my missus is a hairdresser but she’s 2 weeks away from giving birth so even I’m struggling for a haircut.

Question – Jimmy Wittish : Did you see yourself staying at the club for this long and achieving what we have in that time?

Answer – When I joined, Arron Parkinson said to me that this is a club you could spend the next 7-8 years at. We’ve always been playing for something since I’ve been here so I can’t ask for much more. It’s been a pleasure.

Question – Wayne :  Do you have any regrets over your football career? Maybe a team you’d wished you had said yes to or a team you joined and wished you hadn’t?

Answer – I wouldn’t say I have any regrets no. I’ve been playing this level since I was 18/19 and the decisions and clubs you joined at the time feel like the right ones. Sometimes they turn out good like AFCRD, sometimes they don’t and you go again.

This is one of a series of “Ask The Player” Twitter Sessions – you can find the others under the Player News heading.
