For the final friendly fixture before the start of the UCL Premier season on Saturday, an AFC Rushden & Diamonds XI will travel south to face Biggleswade United. The game will also be a chance for Dean Thomas to review players earmarked for his U21 setup this season. With an U18 game scheduled for the same evening there may also be a number of first team players in action.
United play in the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division – which is a step 5 league at the same level as the UCL Premier. They are managed by Mike Reardon, who only took over the reins in the summer after Phil Childs stepped up to the role of general manager and chairman. They play in red and black.
Those going to the game should ensure they follow directions for Second Meadow, and not confuse the club with the near neighbours Biggleswade Town who play some distance out of town. Note also that Second Meadow is quite difficult to locate at the far end of a housing estate – you may see the floodlights shortly after leaving the A1 at the northerly Biggleswade exit (where a big Sainsburys is located).
United are just moving their website to the ubiquitous Pitchero, using mapping software to provide a rough guide to the ground location, but the directions on the old site were roughly as follows “after exiting the A1, go past Sainsburys and over the river bridge. Take the second left into Sun Street just before the car garage. Take the next left into Fairfield Road, then proceed past the houses and cricket club into the lane at the end of the road, with the ground at the end of this road.”
