AFC Rushden & Diamonds captain Danny Bird was in action in the United Counties League on Saturday, joining his team-mate Louis Smith at Rothwell Town as the pair look to gain further senior football experience ahead of the all-important 2012/13 season.
The Diamonds youngsters both featured in the United Counties League Division One match against Potton Utd and they certainly did not look out of place in a physical and competitive game with Bird playing the full 90 minutes and producing a sublime through ball to set up Rothwell’s second goal of the game. It wasn’t to be for the “The Bones” however and despite playing some of the more stylish football, particularly after Smith’s introduction early in the second half, they were on the wrong end of the 6-3 scoreline with the resolute and determined visitors deserving of the three points that they took back to Bedfordshire.
Speaking to afcdiamonds.com, Rothwell Town Assistant Manager Frank Benjamin described himself as “very pleased” with the AFC pair and spoke highly of their future potential.
Rothwell are next in action on Saturday 25th February away at Bourne Town (kick-off 3pm) as they look to begin to overhaul Northampton Sileby Rangers at the foot of the Division One table.
