Louis Lawlor – Development Team Manager Announcement

AFC Rushden & Diamonds are delighted to confirm the appointment of Louis Lawlor as the Club’s Development Team Manager ahead of the 2023/24 season.

Before retiring from the game through injury at the age of 24, Louis was a Goalkeeper, making competitive appearances for Maidstone United, Tonbridge Angels, Chatham Town, Hythe Town and Hashtag United amongst others. At the age of 17, Louis began pursuing coaching badges and launched his own coaching academy – LL Coaching. He has subsequently held coaching positions with Charlton Athletic, Tunbridge Wells, the AFC Rushden & Diamonds Academy and Newport Pagnell Town, for whom he was a First Team Coach and Goalkeeping Coach for the club during the past 2 seasons, helping the club to reach the FA Vase final two years in a row.

Afcdiamonds.com caught up with Louis who spoke of his delight at joining the Club: “I’m delighted to have been offered the managerial role with the Development Squad. The Club has an incredible history and I’m very much looking forward to the challenge this season and developing not only my players but also developing myself as a Coach. I was very fortunate to have played at a similar level to our First Team so I know the kind of player we need to be producing. I’ve always had a passion for coaching and have been lucky to work with some great clubs over the years. The last couple of years at Newport Pagnell, with everything we achieved, was like a dream come true for me.”

“My aim for the season is to push the Development Squad to a successful league and cup campaign as well as establishing a good relationship with Chris Nunn and the First Team. I hope that many of my squad will develop as individuals and bridge the gap between the Development Team and First Team. My aim is that you will see many of them involved with the squad throughout the coming season.”

Chairman Rob Usher had this to say on the appointment of Louis Lawlor: “We are delighted to have Louis come on board to lead the Development Team forward. We all felt the effect of the changes that took place last season and the pathway was no different. We’re rebuilding from the ground up here which isn’t necessarily a dream scenario for the Club, but for a new coach coming in, it’s exciting. I firmly believe Louis can lead the charge.”

“Louis has shown a real ability to develop young players in his role as a goalkeeping coach in our Academy and I’m excited to se what he can bring to this team. Having played at the level himself, Louis is somebody who knows what is needed to perform at the level the First Team are operating at and is well positioned to develop players who are knocking on the door for first team opportunities.”

The AFC Rushden & Diamonds Development team have been holding trials throughout the summer and are still looking to add to the squad ahead of their 2023-24 ChromaSport Northants Combination Premier Division campaign.
