This match will be preceded by a minute’s silence in memory of Gary Speed who sadly passed away over the weekend.
AFC Rushden & Diamonds entertain Northampton Town on Thursday night in a mouth watering County Cup clash at Kiln Park. Northampton Town are one of two Football League sides entering the competition, the other being Peterborough United, so will no doubt provide the Diamonds with their sternest test since the formation of the fledgling club.
AFC R&D advanced to the third round of the competition following a well deserved 2-1 victory over Duston Dynamo in the previous round, preceded by an emphatic 7-0 win over Vicarage Farm in the first round. The Cobblers received a bye in the first round, but won their second round tie with a comprehensive 11-1 thrashing of FootballCV Reds. However, the Cobblers youth side, managed by former first team player Sean Parrish, have been struggling of late, losing 7 of the last 8 matches with the only victory being that against FCV Reds.
The Diamonds are hoping that club captain Danny Bird will be recovered from his recent injury in time to face the Cobblers on Thursday. Bird has been making excellent progress in the last couple of weeks, and is aiming to take part in training on Monday evening where his chances of playing on Thursday will be assessed.
This match is a massive occasion for the club, and is a terrific opportunity for the players and management team to pitch themselves against a full time, professional outfit who compete at an excellent standard of youth football. Please try to get yourself along to the game if at all possible, and if you are able to bring along a friend or family member to help increase the support for AFC Rushden & Diamonds then even better. With enough support, we will create a great atmosphere for the team and hopefully give them an extra lift that could help them cause a massive cup giantkilling!
