Prior to Saturday’s home match against Royston Town, Rob Usher, Club Chairman, presented Roger Knight with a parting gift.
Since the formation of Rushden & Diamonds FC back in 1992 Roger Knight, sporting his clerical collar, was a familiar figure around Nene Park and for the past 10 years at The Dog and Duck and, now latterly, at Hayden Road supporting the current Club.
Back in those early days at Nene Park Roger was in a conversation with Max Griggs one day when Max surprised Roger by suggesting he become the Club’s Official Chaplain. Thus started his 30 years’ service to the Club’s players, officials and supporters.
During that time there have been many occasions where Roger’s calm head and guidance have been required.
There were several occasions where sadly his pastoral and comforting qualities were much needed, none more so than at the time of the tragic passing of Dale Roberts and when the Club went into Administration, resulting in all players and staff losing their livelihood.
He has always made a habit of being available and recognisable to fans at Hayden Road with his pre-match routine of strolling around the whole perimeter of the pitch and was always happy to chat with both home and away fans. As an ex-referee himself Roger always introduced himself to the match officials.
Over the past 30 years Roger has helped many supporters with all sorts of problems, conducted funerals, and even marriages. He will be sorely missed but be assured he will still be a familiar face around Hayden Road on match days for many years to come.
From everyone at “The Diamonds”: THANK YOU ROGER
