Andy, a 3-0 win tonight. What did you make of the performance?
Not ideal, to be honest. [It was] very stop-start especially [in the] first half. I thought we were a lot better [in the] second half when we changed the formation but it was more about getting minutes into the boys who haven’t played much recently so that decided which way we went [in the] first half. I wanted to play three midfielders because there were three central midfielders who needed minutes, to be honest.
So, I wasn’t particularly happy with the first half, a great goal from Shanks [Tom Lorraine] but not many positives I didn’t think. I thought Connor [Furlong] was quite bright at times. But I wasn’t particularly happy at halftime, I changed the formation [and] I thought second half was a lot better.
You obviously made a lot of changes to the side. A lot of senior players coming in for minutes, as you say. Tom [Lorraine] was one of those that came in and scored a brilliant goal like we know he always can.
He’s had probably two-three weeks out with a hamstring [injury] so he trained last week. It was a perfect game for him to come in and have an hour, that was always the plan and I thought he took his goal really really well. We know what Shanks brings to the team so that was a massive plus to get him minutes. I thought he was quite bright certainly in the first half.
You mentioned it was quite stop-start [in] that first half. Was that the message at half-time just to up the ante a little bit?
Yeah, I thought we could play better than we did [in the] first half. There wasn’t enough tempo, there wasn’t enough good play in the final third and equally we didn’t win enough headers and tackles for me. It’s a game of football, it’s there to be won, it’s a Senior Cup game, [it] doesn’t matter about the changes, we weren’t really at it first half – maybe a little bit too easy at times – but we want to set standards and we didn’t reach them in the first half.
You obviously brought Will Jones on at half-time. [He] got two goals tonight, his first competitive senior goals – you must be delighted for him!
Yeah of course! I think he’s been excellent in the three or four games that he’s played. He’s obviously come through games a lot quicker than I thought he would because Shanks hasn’t been able to start, the plan was always to give Jonesey half an hour and build him up gradually but he’s proved he’s ready for it – that isn’t a problem! He’s a great option for us to have. I thought he was sharp. The plan was always to give him a good spell again tonight alongside Shanks as a pair. I think that’s a good pair [we] could see that tonight. We keep saying he’s got a good future in the game.
Apart from the two goals, he had other chances [and] he makes things happen. He runs in places where defenders don’t really wanna track him! [I’m] delighted for his first two senior goals. [He] scored a lot of goals in pre-season and I’ve said all along he will score goals.
You obviously had a couple of other young players in the team. Charlie Nixon starting [with] Fraser Corden coming on. What did you make of their performances?
Charlie made one save, [he] didn’t have loads to do. He’s been in the 16/17s most of the season. He’s been brilliant even when he’s not been in the 16s to come and warm Sneds [Dean Snedker] up. He earned his chance tonight to play, it was good [to see] Sneds was quite happy to come and warm him up so that’s a good little goalkeepers union. And he did himself no harm, [he], didn’t have loads to do. What he did have to do he did absolutely fine.
I like Fraser. I’ve seen quite a little bit of him training and in pre-season games and again he’s got a good future. He’s got some great skills and as I say we’ll see more of him as the season goes on.
Looking ahead to the upcoming games, obviously we’ve got two home games to close out the month. [The] first of those being Hitchin. Did you get a chance to go and see them on the weekend off?
I’ve had Hitchin watched a few times, to be honest, so I know quite a lot about them. I think the team will change from time to time, they had a couple of departures and some others coming in. They play a good brand of football, we’ll train tomorrow night, after tonight, with a game plan ready for Saturday but I’m expecting a tough game.
