Des Whatton, our Volunteer of the Year, wasn’t able to attend the Presentation Evening on Friday night. Diamonds Legend, Tim Sams, met Des at Hayden Road on Saturday afternoon to present him with his award.
Chairman Rob Usher had this to say about Des, and explained why he was so deserving of the award this year:
“Amongst our army of volunteers, Des is an unsung hero.
To so many, Des will be unknown, but those who know him understand the impact he has around the Club.
Quietly, and without fuss, Des goes about his work around the Club. During inclement weather, when the Hayden Road pitch is worse for wear, Des is there supporting the Stadium Manager in ensuring games go ahead. After matches, Des goes around clearing up the stadium.
I’m absolutely delighted to recognise Des as our Volunteer of the Year and thank him wholeheartedly for the support and dedication he shows to our Club.
Volunteers like Des are the very heartbeat of our Club and without people like him, we simply wouldn’t be here.
Thanks for your incredible commitment Des, you’re a true diamond.”
