Wisbech Town v AFC Rushden & Diamonds

AFC Rushden & Diamonds make their second trip to the Fens this season as they travel to face Wisbech Town at the Fenland Stadium on Saturday afternoon. This will be only their fourth away league game of the season, and their first on a Saturday since the trip to Deeping Rangers on the opening weekend of the season.

Although at the start of the week the Wisbech website advised that admission prices were £6 for adults and £4 concessions, they have since updated it to advise that they are are £7 adults, £5 concessions (OAPS & Students), £2 12-16s & Under 12s are free. The website also advises there is free car parking at the stadium, but asks that fans do not park on Lynn Road as this could cause traffic problems, or on  Windmill Gardens or Old Lynn Road/Kirkgate Street to minimise disruption to local residents.

Our Opponents

Wisbech Town are known as the Fenmen, and were formed in 1920, joining the UCL in 1935. They have then moved to the Eastern Counties League, the Midland League, the Southern League and then were relegated back to the Eastern Counties League in 2002 They moved to the Fenland Stadium in 2010, and the ground has covered terracing behind each goal as well as a stand with over 100 seats. At the end of last season they transferred from the Eastern Counties League to the United Counties League rather than taking the promotion to Step 4 they had earned by finishing in runners-up spot in that competition.

They are led by joint player-managers Paul Cousins and Scott Johnson, who took over the reins in September after the club’s disappointing start to life in the UCL, and they play in all red. Their website is here, and their twitter feed here.

They reached the last-32 of the FA Vase last season, which means that they are yet to appear in this season’s competition – but will face Gornal Athletic in the second round.

After a promising start to the season they suffered two defeats by Huntingdon Town, as well as at Deeping Rangers. Their mixed season has continued, but they have established a mid-table position, but lost 4-3 at home to Sleaford Town in midweek. Ex-R&DFC player Tony Battersby has recently joined the Fenmen, his seventeen club in the ten years since leaving the Diamonds.
