Woodford United v AFC Rushden & Diamonds

AFC Rushden & Diamonds will face Woodford United in the first round proper of the FA Carlsberg Vase on Saturday. This will be the Diamonds third tie in this competition this season, having started a round earlier than last season – when they reached the third round proper.

Woodford United are based in the village of Woodford Halse on the western border of Northamptonshire, and they are currently in Division One of the United Counties League.

Should the tie still be level after 90 minutes then extra time will be played, but if the scores are still level after 120 minutes there will be a replay at the Dog & Duck on Tuesday 22nd (KO 7:45pm).

The winners of the tie will play in the second round proper of the competition on the weekend of 16th November. You can see more information on this season’s FA Vase on the FA Website here.

Entry to the ground is via the two turnstiles adjacent to the clubhouse.

Our Opponents

Woodford United were formed immediately after the Second World War, and joined the UCL in 1970, withdrawing in 1978 and rejoining in 1998. They won promotion to the Southern League in 2006, but after off-the-field issues at the start of last season they were relegated from the Southern League and placed in UCL Division One. They are still trying to restructure and rebuild the club, so have continued to struggle this season, losing their first 10 league games at UCL1 level.

An overview of their problems last season was published on the TwoHundredPercent website here.

They are nicknamed the Reds on account of their all-red strip. Their website is here, and their twitter feed here. They are now managed by Mitch Austin who has made a number of recent signings as detailed in the UCL Newsletter for October – and who also includes goalkeeper Domenico Roggero in his squad, who spent some time with AFC Rushden & Diamonds last season.

Several current Diamonds players have had spells at Byfield Road, including Arron Parkinson, Alfie Taylor, Russ Dunkley, Nat Liburd and Aaron King.

Those Diamonds fans who followed R&DFC in the early days of their return to the Football Conference, may remember a trip to Woodford Halse on a very cold March evening in 2007 for the Hillier Cup final. A Chris Beardsley hat-trick secured the cup – report here –  in front of 298 fans.  That game saw one of the few appearances of Mark Wright in a Diamonds shirt – before his days as a TV Celebrity.

Directions for the trip of around 30 miles from the Dog & Duck are here – noting it is quite easy to drive past the entrance to the ground, and most SatNavs will take you to the village or to somewhere on Byfield Road, so it is worthwhile familiarizing yourself with where the ground is relative to the village.

Reaching the ground by public transport is something of a challenge – typically requiring a bus to Northampton, followed by a bus to Daventry, and then catching the hourly Daventry to Banbury service (Bus 200) which goes via Woodford Halse. See here for door-to-door directions and timetables.
